The Art Gallery of Alberta respectfully acknowledges that we are located in Treaty 6 Territory and Region 4 of the Metis Nation of Alberta. We respect this as the traditional and contemporary  land of diverse Indigenous Peoples including the Plains Cree, Woodland Cree, Beaver Cree, Nitsitapi/Blackfoot, Métis, Nakota Sioux, Anishinaabe/Saulteaux/Ojibwe and Dene Peoples. We also acknowledge the many Indigenous, Inuit and Métis people who make Alberta their home today.

'Inheritance': Collective Perspectives Through Poetry & Prose with Amber Paquette

Join us for a special writing program in response to our exhibition Inheritance with Historian Laureate Amber Paquette on April 10th. This program starts with the group learning about the artwork on display, before participants will be asked to share their perspective through poetry and prose which will result in a collective poem. This poem will be shared by our community partner The Edmonton Public Library's Capital City Press after the workshop. Everyone is welcome to attend this program and no prior writing experience is necessary. The exhibition Inheritance features work by Deanna Bowen, Steven Nunoda, Adrian Stimson and a book by AA Bronson. The show forefronts historical facts that are often hidden or untold because they reveal that our shared past includes, and is based on, acts and systems of brutality, racism, and oppression. Told by artists through research into the lives of family members and familial connections, the works in Inheritance demonstrate that history continues to reverberate through time, impacting the present and future.

This public program will take place in person inside the gallery and will last one hour and a half long. Registration is limited and required for guests, due to the space limitations. This program is included in the price of general admission to the gallery or free for members, students, and anyone under 18. If the cost of admission is a barrier for you to attend this program, please reach out to the Public Programs Coordinator at Michael.Magnussen@youraga.ca

We are very proud to partner with the Edmonton Public Library and we are offering a discount to EPL members. For EPL card holders we are offering $7 admission to this program. You can receive this discount when registering for program online or in person.

This exhibition is organized by the Art Gallery of Alberta and curated by Catherine Crowston and Lindsey Sharman. Inheritance is presented by Capital Powered Art, an exhibition series sponsored by the Capital Power Corporation.
