Anime Night with the AGA and ASAPA | Pom Poko and The Red Turtle

two image stills (one from Pom Poko, the other from The Red Turtle) are side-by-side. On the left are a bunch of raccoon-dogs, on the right is a red turtle.

Join us on for a special Anime Night presented by the AGA and our community partner ASAPA (The Alberta Society for Asian Popular Arts) on Thursday March 9 at the Art Gallery of Alberta. We are showing two amazing animated films produced by Studio Ghibli. Both films deal with themes of the environment and explore humans impact/influence on nature, with imaginative storytelling and beautiful animation.

We will be screening both films in our Ledcor Theatre. Watch one or the other or make a night of it and watch both.

Enjoy one film for $10 or both for $15. Members to the AGA get 25% off of their tickets.

6pm | Pom Poko (screened in English, 90 Minutes)

Awarded the Best Animation Film at the 49th Mainichi Film Awards, this film features a community of magical shape shifting racoon dogs (Tanuki) and their struggle to prevent their forest home from being destroyed by urban development.

8pm | The Red Turtle (screened in English minimal dialogue, 120 Minutes)

Directed by Dutch animator Michaël Dudok de Wit and co-produced by Toshio Suzuki of Studio Ghibli, this film tells the story of a man who becomes shipwrecked and meets a giant red turtle. Containing very little dialogue, this film premiered at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the Best Animated Feature Film for the 89th Academy Awards..

About Film Night: Film Night is part of AGA’s public programming that highlights themes from current exhibitions or social and cultural affairs. Join us on the second Thursday of each month for a screening of film that may be missed on the big screen. If you would like to be notified about upcoming films or to suggest a film for screening, please email Michael at Michael.Magnussen@youraga.ca.
