Catherine Stevenson Hockenhull

Artist Statement

I’m inspired by the powerful and dynamic Alberta nature, seeking to capture its physical energy through vibrant colour and texture. I consistently prepare all my canvases with a flood of bright colour and start my acrylic paintings from the back moving forward in layers. Always reflecting on the visual depth nature presents, I desire to represent not always exactly what the actual scene or subject resembles, but more how it feels. Allowing some of that original base colour to shine through my brushstrokes results in enhanced colours and a strong visual depth between nature and what exists in my mind. Creating jewellery from my paintings continues to explores this. By viewing my paintings under glass cabochons, I emphasize the depth visually with the 3-dimentional effect it creates.
