Party Themes

Super Art Academy (Ages 4+)

Ever dreamed of being a superhero? Here is your chance! Test your creative abilities, craft a superhero persona, and discover your unique superpower in this action-packed Superhero training session. Each party features mask-making, emblem painting, and a gallery visit with drawing and movement activities.

Colour Party (Ages 4+)

Paint, play and dance to music!!  Explore the Gallery’s exhibitions to find out how artists use colour to create moods, and then experiment with colour mixing to create your own abstract artwork. Assemble the paintings to make an expressive mural when viewed together.

Play on Architecture (Ages 4+)

Explore the architecture of the AGA from the inside out with a brief gallery tour before heading to the studio to design, draw and build! Create a 3-D architectural sculpture from wood blocks and then paint your architectural masterpiece.

Creative Creatures (Ages 6+)

Delve into the innovative design and building behaviors of animals in current exhibitions before heading to the studio-maker space to experiment with a range of materials and building techniques. Each party will culminate in a unique creature-inspired structure to take home.

My Place (Ages 6+)

Investigate your place in the world through storytelling, gallery explorations and art-making! In Gallery, investigate the basic elements of landscape art, and visit gallery spaces to discover how artists tell stories about ‘places’ in their artwork! In the studio, work with a variety of materials to build a relief sculpture based on a place that is important to you.

Print & Play (Ages 6+)

Discover how artists communicate stories through art. Visit current exhibitions; learn about the elements of art, a special “alphabet” used by artists; and experiment with printmaking techniques and drawing tools to create a unique story to share with your friends.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What can I expect from a birthday party at the AGA?

AGA Birthday parties are fun-filled, hands-on art experiences for your children and their friends. A three-hour program includes:

  • A Gallery Educator to lead your program.
  • Warm up activities while waiting for guests to arrive.
  • A 20-30-minute Gallery tour of exhibitions connected to your studio project.
  • A studio art project to take home.
  • Time for birthday festivities (gifts, snacks, cake, etc).
  • Full use of a studio space for 3 hours.
  • Access to a fridge and limited storage space.

Your AGA Educator facilitates an exhibition tour and an art project for the birthday party. Parents and grown-ups are responsible for additional activities and games.

Not enough time? The studio space can be rented for an additional $60/hour.

2. What are your COVID-19 protocols?

Masks are recommended for the duration of the party. Handwashing, sanitization and physical distancing protocols are also in effect.

3. Is there a cost for additional guests?

Yes, our list price includes facilitation and materials for up to 15 party guests and 5 supervising adults. Additional guests (party guests, parents and siblings) are welcomed for an additional $12 per person.

4. Is there a limit to how many party guests we can invite?

A single studio will accommodate up to 30 party guests and 5 supervising adults. If your numbers are greater than 30, we recommend booking an additional program & studio.

5. Where do the parties take place?

All birthday parties begin in our art-making studios located in the Singhmar Centre for Art Education located on the Lower Level of the Art Gallery of Alberta. A short visit to current exhibitions is included as part of the experience.

6. What does the AGA supply?

The AGA supplies all materials related to the program and art project. Additional items including snacks, decorations and any items required for snacks such as plates, cutlery, napkins, drinking glasses and candles are supplied by the host family.

We have created a special series of invitations for your party! Download them from our website here.

7. What kind of snacks are typical during an AGA Birthday Party?

Typical snacks include cake, ice cream and finger foods. There is limited access to a refrigerator and no access to a microwave.

NB: AGA studios are a nut free zone.

8. When is the best time to arrive?

The host family may arrive 15–20 minutes before the start of the party. Prior to that time, access to your party room may be limited if there is another party or class in progress. Your AGA Educator can assist in light party setup if necessary.

Please encourage your guests to arrive a few minutes early as parking can be tricky downtown.

9. Where can I park near the Gallery?

There are several parkades near the Downtown Arts District.

In addition, there is metered street parking all around the AGA (2-hour limit).

10. Where can I pay my invoice?

Invoices may be paid in advance over the phone or in-person at Guest Services on the main level the day of the booking. Proceed to the Lower Level in the Singhmar Centre for Art Education for setup and party fun.

11. In what ways are the adults expected to supervise?

Up to 5 adults are admitted free of charge and are encouraged to be helpful, positive and proactive in the facilitation of the birthday party experience by assisting all artists, monitoring appropriate behaviour, and respecting AGA art facilities, materials and staff.
