VANCOUVER, BC | Currently working in Vancouver, Mia strives to create relatable portrayals of the feminine, social, and cultural influences in her life. Subject matter frequently centers around Mia’s background, and as a Metis-Japanese-Canadian artist, she seeks to show the viewer a unique mixed cultural perspective.
Interactions with nature and the personification of nature are also subjects she has enjoyed exploring throughout her practice.
Meet the Artist
I typically use black pen on white paper to allow simple communication of complex emotions. The facial features, usually only eyes, allow the viewer to easily place themselves in the shoes of the often mixed-race figures present in the work, akin to a mannequin at a department store. This helps to communicate my frame of mind and deepens their emotional understanding of the concepts I love exploring. Delicate and sometimes intricate linework flows when I put pen to paper, and I particularly enjoy creating landscapes that relax my mind, and hopefully, allows the viewer's mind to calm as well.
