The Art Gallery of Alberta respectfully acknowledges that we are located in Treaty 6 Territory and Region 4 of the Metis Nation of Alberta. We respect this as the traditional and contemporary  land of diverse Indigenous Peoples including the Plains Cree, Woodland Cree, Beaver Cree, Nitsitapi/Blackfoot, Métis, Nakota Sioux, Anishinaabe/Saulteaux/Ojibwe and Dene Peoples. We also acknowledge the many Indigenous, Inuit and Métis people who make Alberta their home today.

jay Dontae

jay Dontae’s art poetically blurs the line between dreams and reality, hope and despair, nostalgia and futurism, and so on... but beyond that he really just wants to make something beautiful that connects. His distinct style can be noted by his focus on deconstruction and exaggerated distortion of the human form, his vibrant colour palette, and his ability to mesh beauty and menace. Painting, fashion, digital artwork, creative direction, and poetry are just a few of the mediums Dontae uses to convey his vision.

Fine artist, designer, poet and dreamer, jay Dontae blurs the line between dreams and reality, hope and despair, nostalgia and futurism. Beyond that, he is driven by the desire to make something beautiful that connects. Dontae’s distinct style is notable for his focus on deconstruction and exaggerated distortion of the human form, his vibrant colour palette and his ability to mesh beauty and menace. These works come from a series he has been working on since 2018. While every piece of art holds its own unique narrative, Dontae’s work is strongest when the viewer dives into the world of each painting and discovers their own story.
