What makes a painting? At first glance this may seem like a simple question but upon further examination it proves to be more challenging. Is it the mere presence of paint in an artwork? Or is it the traditional presentation on a canvas hung on a wall? Is it the expressive nature evident in the work? Or is it how the artist conceptually conceives the artwork?
The artists featured in Re:Calculations each experiment with process in order to challenge traditional categories of painting, sculpture and photography. By extending the boundaries of their respective mediums, those artists play with viewers’ perceptions, challenging us to think differently about what we might consider to be a painting.
