Father's Day: Bubble Wrap Resistance Card

For this project, you will need: paper towel tubes, watercolours and brush, clean water, bubble wrap, scissors, wax paper and white glue. Follow along with our video below as AGA Educator Helen walks you through these fun and creative steps. Instructions are below the video.

Materials

  • Bubble wrap

  • Toilet paper rolls

  • Liquid white glue

  • Watercolour paints

  • Watercolour paper

  • Scissors

  • Markers or sharpies

Steps

  1. Find some bubble wrap from a delivery package and some toilet paper or paper towel rolls. Search for a part of the bubble wrap that you have not popped. Cut out a square large enough to cover the top of your paper roll or create a roller by cutting the bubble wrap to the width of the roll and the length of one roll. Place the bubble wrap with the bubbles facing you. Secure the bubble wrap onto the roll with glue.

  1. Pour some glue onto a plate or wax paper. Roll your bubble tube into the glue gently. Now transfer the glue onto your card surface. Stamp or roll the glue to create patterns on the paper. Do this part carefully so the bubbles are still distinct. Try practicing on the wax paper first if needed.

  1. Let the glue fully dry – make sure it’s no longer shiny. This can take around 20 minutes. While you wait, brainstorm some things that make your father special to you. For example, what is his job, what are his hobbies and passions, what is your favourite thing to do with them?

  1. Once the glue has dried, grab your watercolour supplies. Wet your brush and colours of choice, hold the brush at a slight angle and gently paint across the page. You should start seeing the bubbles resist the paint! Continue until the page is covered and let dry.

  1. On the inside of your card, you can write a message or draw a picture! You can even do more glue resistance by drawing something in glue! This will take longer to fully dry. Once dry, repeat the watercolour painting steps.

  1. Add your finishing touches! Experiment with your bubble wrap more to create more textures and patterns.
