Creating Beauty - A Watercolour Exhibition

Beauty does not linger, it only visits.

Yet beauty’s visitation affects us and invites us into its rhythm,

it calls us to feel, think, and act beautifully in the world:

to create and live a life that awakens the Beautiful.

- John O’Donohue

Beauty is not about glamour or looking pretty, it is about our deep reverence to human relationships and to the natural world.

The 11 participating artists in this exhibition are alumni of the University of Alberta, Faculty of Extension, Visual Arts program. Upon the completion of the Introductory Watercolour Technique course in 2017, some of them continued to meet monthly at Remedy Cafe on 124th to support and to encourage each other in their artistic pursuit. This exhibition is the result of their dedication, perseverance, and years of experimentation in the watercolour medium.

For inspiration to create works for this exhibition, the artists were recommended to read Beauty, the Invisible Embrace by Irish poet John O’Donohue. Subject matter, approach to water-colour medium and skill levels are diverse within the show; the artists have all successfully expressed what beauty means to each one of them.

Deep gratitude to the Edmonton Arts Council and the City of Edmonton for funding this project. And a big “thank you” to the AGA for providing the Community Gallery to showcase this exhibition.
