In celebration of Asian Heritage Month, join us for a special Anime Night presented by the AGA and our community partner The Alberta Society for Asian Popular Arts (ASAPA) on Thursday, May 4 at the AGA. We are showing two blockbuster anime created by the late, legendary film director, animator and manga artist, Satoshi Kon.
We will be screening both films in our Ledcor Theatre. Enjoy one film for $10 or both for $15. AGA Members get 25% off admission.
6pm | Tokyo Godfather (English, 90 Minutes)
Written and directed by Satoshi Kon, Tokyo Godfather is a tragicomedy adventure about three homeless people helping an abandoned baby to find its parents. Tokyo Godfather is funny, heart-warming yet tugs at your heartstrings. In a light-hearted way, the anime explores the challenges that homeless people face while bringing out the compassion in humankind.
8pm: Paprika (English, 90 Minutes)
Paprika is the last feature film directed by the late Satoshi Kon. It is a science fiction psychological thriller about the battle of between a dream terrorist (machine) and a research psychologist. This dazzling and mind-twisting anime explores themes about dreams and identity, and the struggle between conscious and subconscious minds.
About Satoshi Kon: One of the most celebrated anime director, Satoshi started his career as a manga artist. In 1997, he began work on his directorial debut, Perfect Blue, which won him international awards and accolades. His films have been cited as inspiration for Hollywood hits, such as Black Swan and Inception. Satoshi died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 46 in 2010.
About Film Night: Film Night is part of AGA’s public programming that highlights themes from current exhibitions or social and cultural affairs.
