The Art Gallery of Alberta respectfully acknowledges that we are located in Treaty 6 Territory and Region 4 of the Metis Nation of Alberta. We respect this as the traditional and contemporary  land of diverse Indigenous Peoples including the Plains Cree, Woodland Cree, Beaver Cree, Nitsitapi/Blackfoot, Métis, Nakota Sioux, Anishinaabe/Saulteaux/Ojibwe and Dene Peoples. We also acknowledge the many Indigenous, Inuit and Métis people who make Alberta their home today.

InFocus Photo: Identity Ether

“Identity Ether” invites viewers on a contemplative journey through the complex interplay between self-discovery and self-definition. The showcased photographs delve into nuanced realms of identity where Self is explored through the tapestry of cultural and societal ideologies, career, creativity, death, and the psyche. The photographs, many of which are self-portraits, aim to capture the intangible, abstract, and metaphysical though the physical subject of body. Each image serves as a visual narrative, encouraging introspection on the diverse and interconnected layers that form an individual’s sense of self. This exhibition sparks dialogue and serves as a thought-provoking investigation of the multifaceted influences on who we choose to be.

This exhibition is curated by Alexis-Marie Chute and organized by Art Sales and Rental.

Photographers: Saeed Abdollahi, Dani Dimon, Gerry Dotto, Aidan Guerra, Natasha Kravchenko, Yashoda Latkar, Francesco Lepre, Angela Mickle, Quintavius Oliver, Vanessa Tignanelli, and Courtney Townsend.

With InFocus Photo Exhibition celebrating its 10th year of showcasing artwork from a diverse array of artists, our commitment to promoting innovative, thought-provoking, and daring photography remains steadfast. We take pride in featuring contemporary image-makers from various backgrounds, with a particular emphasis on highlighting individuals from gender and ethnic minorities. Our curatorial mandate is rooted in providing a platform for everyone to share their unique histories, stories, and struggles through their photographic lens.
