The Art Gallery of Alberta respectfully acknowledges that we are located in Treaty 6 Territory, the traditional land of diverse Indigenous Peoples including the Plains Cree, Woodland Cree, Beaver Cree, Nitsitapi/Blackfoot, Métis, Nakota Sioux, Anishinaabe/Saulteaux/Ojibwe and Dene Peoples. We also acknowledge the many Indigenous, Inuit and Métis people who make Alberta their home today.

Community Tour of Comic Sans with Jay Bardyla

Join us for the September edition of our Community Tour Series which invites a new speaker each month to lead a tour of a current exhibition, giving our audience a unique perspective on the artwork on display. This month we are excited to have comic expert and educator Jay Bardyla lead a tour of the exhibition Comic Sans. This tour is happening during our monthly free night at the AGA, which happens the last Thursday of the month from 4-7pm.

You can participate in this hour-long program in-person; registration is recommended.

About the Speaker

Jason Bardyla (Jay) was the founder of Edmonton's Happy Harbor Comics. The store was internationally recognized for outstanding community involvement and retail excellence. He is also an accomplished educator and leader in the comic community in Alberta.

About Comic Sans

Contemporary Canadian comics are created without limitations of subject matter, without stylistic constraints and sometimes even without words at all. Comic Sans focuses on the limitless artistic side of Canadian comics and celebrates a broad range of approaches to storytelling. Some of the stories in Comic Sans are biographical or autobiographical, some are familiar and others have sprung from the imaginations of their creators. Comics don’t need to be constrained within the square frame of a comic panel and the work in this show expands well beyond it and even well beyond the page. Comic Sans is a celebration of the endlessly creative medium of graphic narratives.

Comic Sans is organized by the Art Gallery of Alberta and curated by Chris Reyns-Chikuma, University of Alberta and Lindsey Sharman, Art Gallery of Alberta.
