John Freeman
John Freeman was born in 1944 in the city of Toronto and has resided in Alberta since 1947. He received his education at the University of Calgary, The Alberta College of Art and the University of Alberta. He taught art at the University of Alberta from 1972 to 2005 as a tenured faculty member. He is now retired from the University of Alberta and has started The Big Pixel Inc., a fine art digital printing company in Edmonton. Over the past 40 years, Freeman has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Canada and internationally. His work is represented in many public, private and corporate collections. In his art practice he has used a wide range of materials and technologies—sculpture, painting, drawing, print making photography and video. His recent work involves the development of large format digitally generated and printed images that play with the nature of representation and reality mediated by photography and text. Starting in 2016, he has begun to revisit photographic still life images set in shallow or ambiguous spaces as well as continuing to explore the possibilities of text and image.
