Studio Y

Join us every Wednesday from 4-5:30pm for Studio Y, a creative hangout for youth ages 13-17.

Each week, we explore new topics and themes, experiment with art materials and develop foundational skills in a fun and informal studio format. Whether you are looking to refresh your painting game or discover a new talent, Studio Y is the place for teens to connect with like-minded peers and new friends in a warm, safe, friendly and inclusive space.

No art experience is needed, only your adventurous spirit! All Materials are included. 

Studio Y is supported by the AGA Youth Council and generously sponsored by the Butler Family Foundation

Feb 8 | Watercolour Experiments 
Studio Y Returns! In our first session, experiment with water, paint and a few key techniques & kitchen materials to create a series of miniature abstract artworks to keep or trade.

Feb 15 | Embroidery  
Stitch up a drawing using a fabric, needle and thread. Vary your stitches to add texture and depth to your work.

Feb 22 | Installation 
Visit To Play in the Face of Certain Defeat and consider how artist Esmaa Mohamoud has created unique visual statements using found objects like second-hand sports equipment, chains, jerseys and more. In the studio, create your own sculptural installation with props we have on hand.

Mar 1 | Expressive Drawing 
Drawing – you either love it or you hate it! Either way, join us in the studio for a session on expressive mark-making and drawing experiments.

Mar 8 | Floral Beadwork 
Join us in the studio for a beading session. Look at examples of Metis beadwork, explore floral and geometric motifs, and create your own beaded sample.

Mar 15 | Illustrate a Zine 
Work alongside artist Chelsea Wong and create an illustrated zine. Photocopy and trade your zine with other makers and grow a creative library collection.

Mar 22 | Abstract Identity 
Inspired by contemporary artist Hanny Al Khoury’s exhibition LaLa Lands currently on display in the RBC Gallery, layer acrylic paint techniques and personal symbols to create an original artwork on canvas.

Apr 5 | Knitting Circle 
Curious about knitting? Unleash your creativity and learn the basics of this craft while hanging out with other teens. We’ll cover the two most common stitches and have you knitting up a storm in no time! Add to a community project or make something of your own.

Join local photographer Dara Ojo in the studio to learn about his practice, his interest in insects, and some tips and tricks to improve your own photography. Bring your phone or camera to practice your new skills!

Explore monotypes and how this unique printmaking style differs from other printmaking. This painterly method has a wide range of techniques to experiment with. Try these techniques out with different media such as ink and acrylic paint to create unique prints.
