Bernard Hippel
Bernard Hippel was born in Edmonton in 1954. He holds two degrees. Both degrees were acquired at the University of Alberta. In 1982, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and psychology. After working in the field for a number of years, he registered into the Art and Design program. He graduated with distinction from the University of Alberta’s BFA program in 1987, majoring in painting. Since graduating he has been a practicing Canadian artist, who has been exhibiting regularly within Edmonton. To date, Bernard has been painting abstract images for 28 years. His belief in the essentials in painting has not waned over time. If anything, there is an increased commitment towards this belief. Over the years there has been a gradual reduction in colour and shapes within his images. The most current work uses texture with black only on paper, allowing the painting to focus on the variations in light. The result is a more direct, pure, balanced, and contemplative feel to the paintings. His paintings have been displayed in many group exhibitions at the University of Alberta, public and commercial galleries throughout the city. He is represented by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts collection and the Art Rental and Sales Gallery at the Art Gallery of Alberta. Bernard is a member of non-profit arts organizations: Harcourt House, Visual Arts Alberta Association, the Edmonton Contemporary Artists Society (E.C.A.S.) and the Art Gallery of Alberta.
