Susanna Barlow
Susanna Barlow holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Alberta, and is currently studying in the Masters of Fine Arts program at Trondheim Academy of Fine Art in Norway. Recently, she was artist-in-residence at Museum Klöster Bentlage in Germany, and a visiting artist at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria. Barlow has received a number of grants and awards, such as the prestigious Royal Canadian Academy for the Arts/C.D. Howe Graduation Award for Art and Design. Barlow has shown in both solo and group exhibitions throughout Canada, USA, Germany, China and Japan. Barlow's work as a mountaineering guide in Greenland and the west coast mountain range of Canada has served as field research for her creative pursuits. This lived experience of working closely with the land and returning to the urban environment after each guiding season forms the conceptual thrust behind Barlow’s artistic practice. Through visuality, Barlow aims to explore the parameters of our relation to ecology, and furthermore, how shifts in this relationship impact identity and social behaviour.
