Join us at the AGA for a series of tours of Vision Exchange: Perspectives from India to Canada led by Edmonton community members.
The Community Tour series present visitors with unique perspectives on the stories and history told in the exhibition. Partners include local performance artists Rebecca John and Ashna Jacob, community member Jas Panesar and ASSIST Community Services Centre.
This evening, Edmonton based performance artist, Rebecca John, will present her piece bi/chotomy. Following the choreopoetry performance, artists Ashna Jacob and Rebecca John will then investigate Malayali identity from opposite ends of the lived experience spectrum. One having been born in Kerala, raised as a Non Resident Indian (NRI) in the Middle East, and currently living in Canada; the other never having set foot in the mother country, Alberta born and bred. Together they will offer visitors their own "vision exchange" in conjunction with the current exhibition.
bi/chotomy is an exploration of racial androgyny within the Indo-Canadian diaspora. Shaped by influences of bharatanatyam & choreopoetry, tea & coconuts, bridges & oceans, madness & queerness, family & ancestry, it unfurls one person’s path of existing simultaneously as brown & white, first-generation & second-generation, mad & brilliant, binary & non-binary, marginalized & model-minority.
