Film Night – Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003)

January 31, 7 PM

Free

When her father goes blind, peasant girl Griet (Johansson) is forced to work as a maid in the home of painter Johannes Vermeer (Firth). Griet strikes up an unlikely friendship with the artist and eventually becomes the model for one of his most famous works, Girl with a Pearl Earring.

Very little is actually known about Vermeer’s famous painting, and the girl herself is unknown. The mystery surrounding The Girl with a Pearl Earring and its model inspired Tracy Chevalier’s novel of the same name and this film adaptation starring Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth.

This film is screened in connection with Master Strokes: Dutch and Flemish Drawings from the Victoria and Albert Museum.
