Bharatanatyam performance #1

Thursday, January 10

6:00-7:00 pm

Join us for a convivial evening celebrating the traditions and beauty of India!

In conjunction with our recently opened exhibition Goddesses of Creation: Spiritual Traditions of Hindu India between the 3rd and the 18th centuries, Indian classical dance master and artistic director Usha Gupta is treating us to a unique choreographed performance. The performance enacts epic stories of the compassionate Goddess Kali and is inspired by the traditional Hindu sacred sculptures on display.

Visitors are invited to discover Bharatanatyam, a major genre of Indian classical dance that originated in Tamil Nadu. Traditionally a solo dance-acting form exclusively performed in Hindu temples by women until the 19th century, Bharatanatyam expresses South Indian religious themes and spiritual ideas.

This performance event, alongside with the exhibition Goddesses of Creation, encourages the viewer to discover the multiplicity of forms and meanings in these images of the Goddess and the female divine.

ActivateAGA is a series of pop-up performances that activate your AGA in surprising ways and in unique places.
