Your AGA to host Sobey Art Award Exhibition in fall of 2019

The Sobey Art Foundation and the National Gallery of Canada (NGC) announced yesterday that the 2019 Sobey Art Award Exhibition, featuring the work of five finalists shortlisted for the award, will be presented at the Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) from October 5, 2019, to January 5, 2020.

The Sobey Art Award, established in 2002, is Canada's most prestigious award for contemporary art. Canadians 40 and under can be nominated for this year's award until the March 1, 2019 deadline. On April 16, a longlist, comprised of 25 artists from across Canada, will be released. The shortlist of five finalists, each representing one of the designated regions of the country, will be made public on June 12. The winner of the 2019 Sobey Art Award will be announced at a gala reception at the Art Gallery of Alberta on Friday, November 15, 2019. More details about the Sobey Art Award Gala will be made available in the coming months.

AGA Executive Director / Chief Curator, Catherine Crowston, shares her enthusiasm about this upcoming exhibition. "The AGA is very pleased to be able to bring this prestigious exhibition to Alberta’s capital city. It is a tremendous honour for our province and our gallery. There is so much great art being made across the country and it is exciting that we will be able to showcase the Sobey Art Award here at the AGA. We anticipate that the work of the five shortlisted finalist artists will have an impact on our visitors and we are grateful to the Sobey Foundation and the NGC for this partnership."
