FacebookTwitterPinterestShare

The Holy Week, tempera and gold on wood. Russian, Stroganov School, 17th century. Gift of Dr. Lillian Malcove, 1982. Malcove Collection. Courtesy of the Art Museum University of Toronto.

This detailed object is an icon of The Holy Week, the six days of celebration before Easter in the Orthodox Church. It is packed full of delicately detailed depictions of important Biblical events and figures. The top row has miniature images of the Resurrection, the Christ Child, the Beheading of John the Baptist and the Annunciation. Below are the Washing of the Disciples’ Feet and the Crucifixion, with a Deesis, (Christ in Glory) in the middle.

The lower half of the icon is populated by a crowd of meticulously detailed individuals, including hermits and patriarchs, blessed tsars, princes, priests and abbots, saints, prophets and apostles, and monks and nuns.
