hand coloured serigraph
This screen print is from early in my career. At that time, I was doing illustration for posters, books and magazines. Most of my clients were publishers and theatre companies from the local Edmonton area. I was also pursuing a career in the fine arts, exhibiting my personal work at every opportunity.
In the early 80’s, there was a shift in the field of commercial illustration. Work was becoming more open and expressive. Artists like Ralph Steadman, Sue Coe and Ian Pollock were pushing boundaries, and they were a huge influence on how I approached my work. The newly opened SNAP print studios also provided me with the resources to do my screen printing, and I was there often.
The loose, graphic style suits the subject matter. ‘Rough Day at the Office’ portrays an experience most people can relate to and the simplified approach to the drawing emphasizes the raw emotion of the situation.
