Gel Transfer print on Birch Panel
This piece is from a body of work titled “21st Century Nesting Practices” that developed over a five-year period (2012-17). This nest was photographed at a friend’s farm near Smoky Lake AB, in the late fall of 2013. The nest itself was built inside a hollow stump in a dead tree; it was almost invisible, and I almost tripped over it. That moment spoke volumes to me about safety of all sorts: how essential being and feeling safe is in order to thrive, and how this necessity is often overlooked.
