In Canada, artists looking beyond traditional approaches to composition and typical representations of the land led the way into modernity.
Allora & Calzadilla: Echo to Artifact is the first major exhibition in Canada of the work of internationally renowned artists, Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla. It features film, sculpture, sound pieces and performances, and new work based on the artists’ research into western Canada’s prehistoric past. The works in the exhibition consider the nature of sound, music and the voice as a way to animate both natural forms and man-made artifacts and include the remains of dinosaurs, a piece of Hadean rock and the oldest musical instrument ever discovered.

The Quebec based artists known as Les Automatistes were the first artists to bring modernist painting to Canada and the first Canadian artists to embrace avant-garde, gestural abstraction. This exhibition includes 60 works of art, as well as photographs, books, and other ephemera documenting the history of Les Automatistes, Canada’s first truly avant-garde art movement.
Rearview Mirror brings together the work of a new generation of artists that represent the diverse backgrounds and histories of the former Eastern Europe. Looking both to the past and the future, the 22 artists included in the exhibition challenge accepted notions of ‘Eastern Europe’ as being a social, political and art historical monolith.
