Todd Hirsch

Todd Hirsch with Janvier artwork   Alex Janvier Grand Entry

“I’ve always been attracted to colours, especially when they’re represented in the abstract. The organic patterns and curves of Alex Janvier’s Grand Entry keep drawing me in. The hints and suggestions of the Aboriginal images blend and melt into the long arcs of colour, almost like a dream – you can never quite pin down the image, yet it floats there before you. I can gaze at this piece for a long while, and come back to it again and again. And each time I notice something I hadn’t seen before. The painting almost seems to move and pulsate.”

Todd Hirsch is the Chief Economist at ATB Financial. He holds a BA Honours in Economics from the University of Alberta and an MA in Economics from the University of Calgary. For over 20 years he’s worked as an economist at Canadian Pacific Railway, the Canada West Foundation and the Bank of Canada. He provides economic commentary for several media outlets, and has served on the University of Calgary’s Board of Governors and the Calgary Arts Academy.

Hirsch released his third book, Spiders in Space: Successfully Adapting to Unwanted Change in 2017. He also writes an economic update that is sent to thousands of subscribers around the world every day. It’s called The Owl and you can subscribe at atb.com/economics.
