Lauren Crazybull

Lauren Crazybull with Janvier artwork   Janvier artwork "Suckerville"

“The work I chose from the gallery’s collection is one I’m a big fan of: Suckerville by Alex Janvier. Janvier’s work has always been very inspiring to me. I am drawn to his experimental and abstract style to create works that stem from different histories and current issues that might not seem immediately obvious to the viewer. This particular piece stood out to me because of all the painting and texture techniques in a single piece. I admire the way in which Janvier creates such intense, stunning works that include traditional elements.”

Lauren Crazybull is a self-taught Blackfoot, Dene artist living in Edmonton, Alberta. They are also the art coordinator at iHuman Youth Society working with young artists who face high-risk situations and challenges.

Lauren’s ongoing work is informed by past work in creating and hosting audio productions, and challenging colonial frameworks and systems. Their current projects include creating a weekly web comic, practicing and teaching healing through the arts, and finding justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous people.
