The Art Gallery of Alberta respectfully acknowledges that we are located in Treaty 6 Territory and Region 4 of the Metis Nation of Alberta. We respect this as the traditional and contemporary  land of diverse Indigenous Peoples including the Plains Cree, Woodland Cree, Beaver Cree, Nitsitapi/Blackfoot, Métis, Nakota Sioux, Anishinaabe/Saulteaux/Ojibwe and Dene Peoples. We also acknowledge the many Indigenous, Inuit and Métis people who make Alberta their home today.

iHuman: In Your Neighbourhood

FacebookTwitterPinterestShare

Founded twenty years ago and currently located 2 blocks east of the AGA, iHuman Youth Society is an organization that provides a broad range of opportunities to marginalized young people between 12 to 24 years of age in Amiskwacîwâskahikan (Edmonton).

A core component of iHuman’s approach is offering arts-based programming as a positive engagement tool. We believe creativity is a source of power that everyone should have the opportunity to practice, no matter what background they come from. These opportunities act as the fuel for many youth to empower themselves and affirm their identity. iHuman is committed to a flexible stance to make our resources available to a collective of youth with a wide range of needs and abilities.

iHuman Studios includes a Fashion/Textile Studio, a Visual Art Studio, and a Music Studio each headed by a full-time staff member to engage youth in the act of creating music, painting, clothing, theatre, video, spoken word, podcasts, etc. etc. This exhibit is far from comprehensive, but represents some of the facets of iHuman’s creative programming.

1st Row (From top) : Fashion

The fashion studio at iHuman provides young artists opportunities to learn new skills and express their creativity in a diverse range of mediums. These pieces reflect this diversity, representing hand and machine sewing, special FX makeup, modelling/photoshoots, embroidery, rug-hooking, hand-dyed fabric, and flower crown construction.

2nd row: Cree Dictionary Project

The Cree dictionary project is a project that combines art and Cree words to honour the land and bring in language revitalization into our arts and authenticity programming.

3rd Row: Graffiti As Dialogue

Graffiti As Dialogue is a project that started in 2016. The project has run for 2 consecutive years and has grown into an engaging piece of temporary public art. Graffiti is a contentious topic in the city as it is seen as something purely criminal rather than a public response to the major changes in the downtown core. We explore these topics with the public and hope to stir up different ideas about this form of expression.

4th Row: Youth exhibitions

The art studio at iHuman has integrated Youth led art exhibitions to showcase the work and time spent in the studio. The photos here were taken on a film camera by Spain Angecomb.
