Art Gallery of Alberta rolls out the first in a series of admission changes

Free admission for youth under 18 and for Alberta students 18+

The Art Gallery of Alberta is pleased to announce that beginning March 28, all children, youth under 18, and Alberta’s students will have free access to the gallery.

From March 28 onwards, admission to the AGA during regular operating hours will be free for anyone:

  • Under 18 years of age; and
  • 18+ with valid Alberta student ID.

The AGA’s regular operating hours are weekends 10 am – 5 pm and weekdays from 11 am – 5 pm, with extended hours to 8pm on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Any children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

“Through the generous support of the City of Edmonton, we have the opportunity to explore how we can connect more Albertans to the incredible art and ideas at the Art Gallery of Alberta,” said AGA Board of Directors Chair Darcy Trufyn at the Tuesday morning announcement.

“I’m very proud that our first initiative gives our visitors with the biggest imaginations—children, youth and students—unfettered access to engage the full range of exhibitions and works within our Gallery.”

In a written statement from Executive Director and Chief Curator Catherine Crowston stated, “These changes to our admissions, with the City of Edmonton’s support, will go a long way in helping us redefine how the public accesses the Art Gallery of Alberta.

“By offering free admission for children and youth, we believe we can make the gallery an affordable destination for families and students.

“And, we must also be able to sustain our efforts. We expect that with these initiatives, we will develop new strategic partnerships and alliances with individuals and corporations—so that the AGA can continue to engage, create, and innovate.”

And, AGA student member and Student Council Volunteer Cassandra Williamson expressed her delight, too: “I had never been to the AGA until I joined the [Youth] Council, because my family doesn’t have a lot of money. It was this ‘thing’ that I couldn’t do because we couldn’t afford it. And now people like me can, and I think it’s great!”

With the support of the City of Edmonton, this initiative is a fundamental part of the AGA’s new 5-year strategic plan. This plan is designed to

  • provide more access to Edmontonians and Albertans,
  • increase the number of people who visit the gallery regularly,
  • reach new audiences in Edmonton, Alberta, and beyond, and
  • provide ongoing engaging visitor experiences.

The first new admission model will take effect when the AGA opens at 11 AM Tuesday morning.

The remaining models will be announced in the coming months.
