Film Night | Black History Month Edition | Programmed by YEGTheComeUp!

Join YEGTheComeUp! And the AGA for a special Black History month edition of our Monthly Film Program on Thursday February 9th at the Art Gallery of Alberta. Guest programmed by Faith Abimbola from the YEGTheComeUP!

We are screening two amazing films by Director Barry Jenkins, including Oscar winning Moonlight at 6pm and If Beale Street Could Talk at 8pm. Enjoy one film for $10 or both for $15 for General Admission. Seniors & students receive a discount of $5 per film or $10 for both. This screening is part of the AGA’s programming for Black History Month. Please note that both films are rated 14A, which means that people under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

6pm | Moonlight (2016 – 111 Minutes)

This Oscar Winning film follows three time periods of the main character Chiron who grapples with his identity and sexuality while experiencing the everyday struggles of childhood, adolescence, and burgeoning adulthood.

8pm | If Beale Street Could Talk (2018 -117 Minutes)

A young woman embraces her pregnancy while she and her family set out to prove her childhood friend and lover innocent of a crime he didn’t commit.

About YEGTheComeUp! Through the Africa Centre: Between our elders and children, Africa Centre recognizes that the youth are often forgotten. For this reason, the youth of the Africa Centre created a collective in September 2013 previously referred to as the Youth Empowerment Group, YEG and now YEGTheComeUP!

As a subset of our greater organization, the Africa Centre, YEGTheComeUp! shares core values and principles and presents itself as a hub of African and Caribbean youth of our greater communities.

About Film Night: Film Night is part of AGA’s public programming that highlights themes from current exhibitions or social and cultural affairs. Join us on the second Thursday of each month for a screening of film that may be missed on the big screen. If you would like to be notified about upcoming films or to suggest a film for screening, please email Michael at Michael.Magnussen@youraga.ca. Alternatively, you can subscribe to our E-News or follow us @youraga on social media to get the latest news.
