Exhibition Opening | Fall Exhibitions

Join us on the evening of Friday, October 21 to celebrate and honour the artists and curators of our fall exhibitions, including: BEHOLD|EN: New Acquisitions to the AGA Collection, Conjured Images: Spirit Photography from the turn of the 20th Century, Riaz Mehmood: Ghazal—Songs for Home, Road Trip, Scents of Movement, Scents of Place and Shuffle: Artwork from the Nina Collective.

Members will have a preview of the exhibitions at 6pm with opening remarks to begin at 6:20pm.

The public will have access to the opening from 7:30-9pm.

About the Exhibitions

Riaz Mehmood: Ghazal—Songs for Home

This exhibition is a tribute to Riaz Mehmood’s homeland in Kyhber Pakhtunkhwa, along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. In video, photography, painting and textile, Mehmood present moments of memory, joy, syncretism and resilience through an exploration of poetry, song, dance and the landscape. Countering deep-rooted and persistent colonial stereotypes, Ghazal—Songs for Home is a celebration of Pashtun culture and identity in all its complexity and beauty.

Organized by the Art Gallery of Alberta and curated by Danielle Siemens. This exhibition is presented in the RBC New Works Gallery that features new artworks by Alberta artists and continues the Art Gallery of Alberta’s tradition of supporting and promoting Alberta artists.

Road Trip

This exhibition features almost 100 works of art from the AGA collection that represent some of the most iconic images of the road trip: vehicles, highways, hotels, landscape vistas and popular destinations. Including work in all media, the exhibition takes us on a drive through scenes from both our past and present. The works are both representational and fantastical, with artists documenting the world around us and creating new landscapes and imaginary vistas.

Road Trip is organized by the Art Gallery of Alberta and curated by Catherine Crowston.

Conjured Images: Spirit Photography from the turn of the 20th Century: This exhibition features photos from Italy, England, France, Canada and the United States where “extras” or ghostly apparitions appear on film, and is sponsored by Capital Power.

Shuffle: Artwork from the Nina Collective: Shuffle showcases selected groupings of works by artists in the Nina Collective. This exhibition is presented in partnership between the Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts and the Art Gallery of Alberta.
