EDMONTON, AB | With a love for colour and naturally occurring elements, Emily easily finds her influence for choice of medium and composition. She demonstrates fluidity of motion through abstract alcohol ink, inviting the viewer to interpret their own meanings from her work. Emily takes part in several local shows annually and her pieces can be found in local shops and in the homes of avid art collectors. She balances her time with creating commissioned works of art, creating her online shop and developing new pieces for upcoming shows.
Meet the Artist
Each new piece starts with a selection of colour palette. I use various Copic & Jacquard alcohol-based inks for pigment and isopropyl alcohol as my activator. The paper used is Yupo Paper by Legion, which is plastic based. As the paper is non-porous, the inks have a moment to float on the surface and be manipulated by air tools until the alcohol evaporates, leaving behind a unique ink stain. Varying techniques are used for each piece to achieve different effects such as a hairdryer, straw, or blowing on and tipping the paper while the ink is in puddles. Once I am happy with the image, I seal the art with several coats of varnish and UV protectant. The paper is then framed and ready for sale. Sometimes pieces are mounted to wood panel and finished with resin for a glossy shine.
