Modernism in Toronto: Or Border and Edge in the ‘Bush Garden’ with Shepherd Steiner

This in-gallery lecture and optical attention lab focuses on the problem of line, framing edge and boundary in Jack Bush’s practice. The tension between graphic mark and colour field as well as Bush’s work against the figure/ground relationship will occupy the majority of our lab time. The lecture will focus on how these optical instabilities relate to modernism South of the border, what Northrop Frye calls the ‘garrison mentality’ of Canadian literature, the emergence of an art market in Toronto…
