May is looking to be a busy month at the Art Gallery of Alberta. We’ve got art classes and programs for everyone in the family.
Open studio sessions
For teens who already have a project, but need a place to work on it, our new open studio allows you to rent a studio space for $5 on Sundays from 1-3pm (except for Mother’s Day and Victoria Day weekend).
Studio Y Drop-ins
Those youth who would like a bit more structure to their art class can drop-in to Studio Y classes on Thursday nights for $12/class. The classes are based around the art and themes in the AGA’s current exhibitions and offer teens the opportunity to experiment with new techniques. Upcoming sessions include:
May 12 | Open Studio
May 19 | Art & Science
May 26 | Dabbling in Dry Materials
Party at SWARM
At the end of the month, teens are encouraged to join us for the final SWARM of the school year. At 5pm teens will take over the gallery and enjoy art-making activities, snacks and socializing. It’s a great chance to be creative and make some new like-minded friends!
TD Education Gallery Exhibition
While you’re down in our education classrooms making amazing art, be sure to take a peek TD Education Gallery Exhibition. From May 9-26, Victoria School for the Arts Jr. High & High School students will be displaying their work. We’ll also celebrate their works at a reception at 5:30pm on Thursday May 26.
There are classes for kids too!
Saturday Open Studio
Saturday Open Studio is our popular drop in class for ages 6-12. This month’s fun themes include:
May 7 | Shaped Experiences
Get inspired by Brittney Bear Hat and Richelle Bear Hat’s exhibition Little Cree Women (Sisters, Secrets & Stories). Reflect on your own individual and shared identities as you create a personal work of art, taking into consideration notions of self, family, community, and environment.
May 14 | Irresistible Iconography
Consider how the artists of 7: Professional Native Indian Artists Inc. used symbols and icons in their work before creating your own symbol. Work with bold colours and mixed media to create and reveal your own iconographical images.
May 28 | Sensory Abstraction
Can you imagine what it feels like to be inside a work of art? Rely on your five senses and put your imagination to the test. Today, we will create visual images of smells, sounds, and feelings.
Tours for Tots
For the little ones, Tours for tots at 10am on Wednesdays is the perfect morning date for parents and their 3-5 year olds. With a different theme every week, you can create art that you’ll both be proud to hang on the refrigerator!
BMO All Day Sunday
BMO All Day Sunday on May 15 is fun for all ages! This month’s theme is “Ready, Set…Build! Start by examining art on the terrace, Hunting Blind by Robin Arsenault and Paul Jackson. Then build sculptures and large scale installations with us in the Atrium.
Maker Day with the Edmonton Public Library
On Saturday May 29, Edmonton Public Library: Stanley Milner is hosting their first ever maker day! Come over and help us build a sculpture!
We hope to see you and your family around the gallery this month!
