We live in a highly-mediated society where the borders between personal and public identities are blurred. We are witnessing a constant change in the way people build their communities and use new symbols in their communication. It is an era in which we navigate symbols that often conflict.

Representing an example of how we understand and use these symbols, this exhibition looks at media products from the Idle No More and Occupy! movements from the perspective of this social-networks generation.

This exhibition is a place where students from the Modern Languages and Cultural Studies department at the University of Alberta use art to do social science research. OCCUPY THE GALLERY! is a space to rethink the role of art in public discourse.
This exhibition is presented in partnership between the Art Gallery of Alberta and the University of Alberta.
