“Lyndal Osborne has played a significant role in the development of Alberta’s visual arts community. She’s made great contributions to our province’s cultural heritage,” says Catherine Crowston, AGA Executive Director and Chief Curator. “Osborne was instrumental in establishing the printmaking program at the University of Alberta, where she taught for decades, inspiring generations of Alberta artists. We’re thrilled to organize this exhibition by such an influential Edmonton artist.”
Bowerbird, Life as Art showcases Osborne’s diverse body of work—beginning with large airbrush drawings from the mid-1970s and a selection of print works that were created between 1975 and 1995. In 1995, Osborne’s creative focus shifted to the complex, multi-dimensional installations that she is now known for, and it was these large-scale sculptural creations that brought her work greater public and critical awareness.
Densely woven and deeply layered constructions, Osborne’s sculptures are made of natural materials and found objects sourced from her vast personal collection, which have been gathered from as far away as her native Australia to the prairies of her current home in Alberta. Through observing, collecting and manipulating these found materials, Osborne enhances one’s understanding of the natural world and asks us to question our place within it. Her work also expresses the artist’s interest and growing concern for the environment and addresses issues such as, genetic modification, global warming, urbanization and the effects of industry on the land. By incorporating industrial and technological objects and processes into her work—Osborne’s installations speak to the diversity and complexity of nature but also question the consequences of human intervention.
Lyndal Osborne has been exhibiting in Canada and around the world since the early 1970s and has been featured in over 350 exhibitions worldwide. Her work is also on display in the current BMO World of Creativity: Cabinets of Curiosity at the AGA.
