EDMONTON, AB (June 13/12) – The Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) is pleased to announce the opening of The Automatiste Revolution: Montreal 1941-1960, June 23–October 14, 2012.

Considered to be one of the most important modernist movements in Canada, the Automatistes formed officially in 1942 in Quebec. They rejected the concept of a unified national art and turned to abstraction as a means to express discontent with the rigidity and conservatism that they perceived in the world around them—in religion, the academy and society.  In 1948, the group published Le Refus Global (Total Refusal), an anti-religious and anti-establishment manifesto—one of the most controversial artistic and social documents in modern Quebec; the Automatistes were heavily involved in the period of intense social change in that province that led to the Quiet Revolution of the 1960s.

The group had a new approach to art and was part of an international exploration of abstraction, which was occurring at the same time in the United States and Europe.

The Automatistes included painters, as well as dancers, playwrights, poets, critics and choreographers. They boldly departed from conventions of representation and sought out new imagery and inspiration through the exploration of the subconscious using automatic drawing and free association

The Automatiste Revolution is curated by Roald Nasgaard, author of The Automatiste Revolution (2009) and Abstract Painting in Canada (2008) and organized by the Varley Art Gallery of Markham. Presented in Edmonton by Enbridge and Simons.
