EDMONTON, AB – The 12th annual Art on the Block silent auction and cocktail party at the Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) will take place on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at 6:30 pm. The event will feature more than 80 works of art, worth more than $100,000, donated by artists and local galleries, along with exciting art-inspired items. The funds raised will go towards the on-going presentation of exceptional exhibitions and educational programs at the AGA.

All proceeds from the auction will be placed directly back into the operation of the not-for-profit, which is showcasing more than 15 exhibitions in 2010 and has already hosted a total of 4,500 school students, 175 adults and 300 children through its art education programs, in addition to more than 40,000 visitors, since opening in late January 2010.

Artworks ranging in value from $150 to $15,000 will be up for auction in three lots. Art from notable local, regional and national artists like Liz Ingram, George Littlechild, Graham Peacock and celebrated Canadian photographer, Edward Burtynsky will be a part of the public sale. Also up for auction are art-inspired pieces such as ‘Flowers for a Year’ by The Artworks, a season subscription for Brian Webb Dance, as well as Big Board items including VIA Rail passes to Vancouver and a New Year’s Eve Private Party at the AGA with Catering by Zinc.

Seasoned art collectors, novices and people who just love art are all welcome. Art on the Block is a great opportunity to mingle with Alberta’s leaders, art lovers, collectors, philanthropists and trendsetters, all of whom share a commitment to supporting a strong role for art in our communities. The evening will feature gourmet food and beverage by Zincatering, led by Chef David Omar and the Zinc culinary team.

The Art Gallery of Alberta is a centre of excellence for the visual arts in Western Canada, connecting people, art and ideas. The AGA is focused on the development and presentation of original exhibitions of contemporary and historical art from Alberta, Canada and around the world. The AGA also offers a full-range of art education and public programs. Founded in 1924, the Art Gallery of Alberta maintains a collection of over 6,000 objects and is the oldest cultural institution in Alberta and the only museum in the province solely dedicated to the exhibition and preservation of art and visual culture. The AGA recently underwent a major re-building project. Designed by Los Angeles architect Randall Stout, the 85,000 sq foot (7,900 sq metres) new AGA opens to the public on January 31, 2010. The new Gallery features three floors of premiere exhibition space; the City of Edmonton Terrace; the Singhmar Centre for Art Education; Zinc resto lounge; Shop AGA; Ledcor Theatre and an Art Rental and Sales Gallery.

The Art Gallery of Alberta is a not-for-profit organization that relies on the support of its Members, donors, sponsors and government. The AGA is grateful for the generous support of the many public and private donors and sponsors who have made the AGA’s New Vision possible, as well as the ongoing support of the City of Edmonton, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, The Canada Council for the Arts and our Members.
