EDMONTON, AB – On Wednesday, January 20, 2010, the Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) will release 5,000 more free timed-tickets for a full day of free access on Qualico Family Day, February 15, 2010. The AGA will be extending its hours of operation that day to 10 am-9 pm to accommodate the maximum amount of people possible. This announcement comes after an enormously positive public response to the AGA’s two-day opening celebration scheduled for January 31 and February 1, 2010. 10,000 free online tickets were released on January 18, 2010 and were completely booked in less than 24-hours.

“We’re just thrilled about the amazing response from this community. Albertans can’t wait to see the new AGA…and we can’t wait to share it!” says Gilles Hébert, the AGA’s Executive Director. “The tickets went so quickly, we decided to add another day of timed-ticket entry to our opening month. We want to welcome as many people as possible to the new AGA, which, based on this incredible enthusiasm about the opening, is set to become a vibrant community
gathering spot and a gallery of all Albertans.”

The booking process for Qualico Family Day, February 15, 2010 will be the same as the other two-days of timed- tickets. Visitors will be able to book tickets online at for a specific time. The free tickets (maximum of four per person) will be issued online on a first come, first serve basis. Entrance into the new Gallery during the Family Day event will not be permitted without a valid timed-ticket. Recommended visit time is one hour.

For those Albertans and visitors to our province unable to make it to the Gallery for one of the three free days, the AGA will be open, with its new hours, starting Tuesday, February 2, 2010.

The AGA also invites the public to become an AGA Member in order to enjoy a full-year of free admission. Other Membership benefits include invitations to exhibition openings, discounts on art classes, programs and at Shop AGA and Zinc resto lounge and more.

The Art Gallery of Alberta is creating a new gallery—a “New Vision” for Alberta’s capital. After a global architectural competition, Los Angeles based Randall Stout Architects, Inc. was selected to design the new gallery. With opening exhibitions in early 2010, the new AGA will be an 85,000 square foot premier presentation venue for international and Canadian art, education and scholarship. The new AGA will be a centre of excellence for the visual arts in Western Canada in the 21st century, expressing the creative spirit of Alberta and connecting people, art and ideas.

Founded in 1924, the Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) is the oldest cultural institution in Alberta and the only museum in the province strictly devoted to the exhibition and preservation of art and visual culture. Serving both the city of Edmonton and the province of Alberta, the Gallery maintains a collection of nearly 6,000 objects. The AGA is focused on the development and presentation of original exhibitions of contemporary and historical art; on building national and international curatorial partnerships for the creation of new exhibition projects; and on the development and delivery of a program of touring exhibitions that disseminate contemporary and historical art within Alberta and across Canada.

The AGA is a not-for-profit organization that relies on the generous support of its Members, donors, sponsors and government. The Art Gallery of Alberta is grateful for the generous support of the many public and private donors and sponsors who have made the AGA’s New Vision possible, as well as the ongoing support of the City of Edmonton, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, The Canada Council for the Arts and our Members.
