Public talk explores famed printmaker Francisco Goya’s transition from satirist to history teller

EDMONTON, AB – The Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) is pleased to welcome Dr. Janis Tomlinson for an exclusive, one-time lecture on the artist, Francisco Goya on Wednesday, March 17, 7pm. Dr. Tomlinson will share her wealth of knowledge about the 18th century artist in relation to the current AGA exhibition Francisco Goya: Disasters of War and Los Caprichos. Tomlinson will deconstruct Goya’s imagery of war as it presents an unflinching depiction of gruesome conflict. The lecture will examine the artist’s transition from satirist to representing history; much like how contemporary documentary photojournalists do.

Currently the Director of University Museums at the University of Delaware, Dr. Tomlinson oversees art collections and galleries. She was previously Director of Exhibitions and Cultural Programs at the National Academy of Sciences (1999-2003); and taught as Assistant and Associate Professor
of Art History at Columbia University (1987-1995). Over the years, she has been a consultant and lecturer for exhibitions on Francisco Goya at a variety of museums, including the Museo del Prado, the Museo Nacional de Arte in Mexico City, Berlin’s National Gallery and the Frick Collection. In 2002, she was the U.S. curator for the exhibition; Goya: Images of Women at both the Museo del Prado and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. Dr. Tomlinson has been a Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (1995-6), the Guggenheim Foundation (1996-7) and the American Council of Learned Societies.

The AGA’s exhibition, Francisco Goya: The Disasters of War and Los Caprichos, is the first in for the Gallery’s new partnership with the National Gallery of Canada, supported by the Capital Power Corporation through an exhibition series called Capital Powered Art. The new program, The National Gallery at the Art Gallery of Alberta, brings significant works from our nation’s collection exclusively to Edmonton each year. The exhibition figures Goya’s two famous print suites: Los Caprichos (1799) and The Disasters of War (1810-1820). Together these two bodies of work have come to be seen as the most influential graphic series in the history of Western art.

The Goya Lecture: Janis Tomlinson
Date: Wednesday, March 17
Time: 7 pm
Location: Ledcor Theatre, Art Gallery of Alberta
Admission: $15 / $10 AGA Members

This is the third event in the AGA’s on-going lecture series, where the Gallery brings leading international scholars, thinkers and artists to speak with the Albertan public on featured AGA exhibitions. The next lecture will be on Wednesday, May 5 at 7 pm, given by David Travis, retired Curator of Photography at the Art Institute of Chicago. Travis will be speaking on the art and process of famed Canadian photographer, Yousuf Karsh.

The AGA will also be illuminating the life and art of Francisco Goya with the 2006 feature film, Goya’s Ghosts, being shown on Friday, March 12 at 7pm in the Gallery’s Ledcor Theatre. Directed by Milos Forman and featuring Natalie Portman and Oscar winner Javier Bardem, the 2-hour film details Goya’s involvement with the Spanish Inquisition when his muse, Ines, is arrestedby the church for heresy. The screening is a part of an on-going free film series at the AGA, where art is put to film.

Valentine’s Day marks the start of the gallery’s enhanced family-focused activities

February 11, 2010

EDMONTON, AB – Exciting family programs at the new Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) start this weekend. The AGA’s family-focused activities provide an opportunity for families and people of all ages to spend time together while engaging with current exhibitions and learning about the art-making process.

“The AGA is for all Albertans, of all ages”, says Gilles Hébert, Executive Director, “and with the great activities and programs we offer for children, families can make a full day of their visit to their AGA.”

HSBC All Day Sundays are on-going full days of art activities that take place on the second Sunday of every month. Designed around current AGA exhibitions, HSBC All Day Sundays feature a new theme with new activities each month. On February 14, 2010 at 10 am-5 pm, HSBC All Day Sunday features the theme ‘My Vintage Valentine’, inspired by the exhibition EDGAR DEGAS: Figures in Motion. Visitors of all ages can participate in Degas-inspired interactive activities, including card and locket making as well as dance instruction and more.

A brand new family program starting on February 24, 2010 is Tours for Tots. The Wednesday morning drop-in program takes place from 10-11:30 am and is designed for children aged 3-5, accompanied by an adult. Enrichment activities, such as art-making, story time, and scavenger hunts encourage close-looking and promote visual literacy skills in young children. This program is free with regular gallery admission.

The AGA has also created an Art Adventure Guide book, which allows families to enjoy self-guided tours at their own pace during any Gallery visit. The free, specially-designed logbooks, filled with facts, games and hands-on exercises, help all gallery-goers, young and old, to connect with the art at the AGA. A new guide book will be produced for each of the AGA exhibition blocks with a focus on the artworks currently on display.

For more information on family programming at the AGA, please visit youraga.ca.

EDMONTON, AB –The Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) opened its new doors to an enthusiastic public this past weekend. During the first four days of opening events, close to 12,000 people took in the Randall Stout-designed building and exceptional historic and contemporary art exhibitions from Friday, January 29-Monday, February 1, 2010. The AGA’s Membership has grown to an all-time high of 2,250 annual memberships with the addition of more than 450 new Members in the two months leading up to the opening and 200 more in the first three days of the AGA being open.

The Gallery’s opening festivities began on Friday evening with a black-tie gala, the final fundraiser for the Gallery’s capital campaign. The following morning, January 30, 2010 was the official ribbon-cutting ceremony presided over by the Chair of the AGA’s Board of Directors, Allan E. Scott. The dignitaries in attendance included Canada’s Minister of Public Works and Government Services, the Honourable Rona Ambrose; Minister of Western Economic Diversification, the Honourable Lynne Yelich; Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, the Honourable Norman L.
The AGA officially opened for viewing on Sunday, January 31, 2010 at 9 am when the first of approximately 10,000 timed-ticket holders entered the building. In order to ensure the comfort and enjoyment of the large number of visitors, the AGA scheduled entry of 175 people into the building every 30 minutes until 9 pm that evening as well as 9 am-9 pm on Monday, February 1, 2010.

Over the weekend, the AGA involved more than 75 volunteers, working a total of 1,400 combined hours. The local arts community, including the Citadel Theatre, Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and Edmonton Opera, supported the Gallery as they enlisted their volunteer base to help augment the AGA staff and volunteers.

The Gallery is now open with its regular hours and admissions. The first day of standard operation on February 2, 2010, the AGA welcomed more than 300 visitors, both one-time admissions and members. The AGA is open from 11 am to 7 pm Tuesday to Friday and 10 am to 5 pm on weekends and holidays.

Inaugural exhibitions feature significant historical and contemporary works by Canadian and international artists, including Edgar Degas, Francisco Goya, Yousuf Karsh, Edward Burtynksy, Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller.

During this first week, the AGA will host more than 400 students and 400 teachers for the Greater Edmonton Teachers’ Convention Association (GETCA) conference. Within the spring semester there will be approximately 20 arts education programs. There will be three family studios, four kids Saturday art classes, three youth classes, four adult classes, one older adult class and a combination of six community and outreach programs for the spring semester. An average of four school programs will run every day.

The more than 1,300 works in AGA’s Art Rental and Sales collection, ranging in medium, sizes and subject matter are now available for purchase or rental. The inventory is in a constant state of renewal and change with new artists joining our core group every year.

The final event as part of the AGA’s opening week is the first in the new series of late night art parties, Refinery. The lively new series will feature Alberta-based artists from multiple disciplines, including film, music, dance, photography and design. There are three Refinery parties planned for 2010, each themed around a different AGA exhibition.
Architect, all three levels of government and community members join to mark the launch of Canada’s newest art gallery

January 29, 2010

EDMONTON, AB – The Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA), in downtown Edmonton, will open to the public on January 31, 2010 at 9 am. The remodeled 85,000 square foot gallery, designed by Los Angeles architect Randall Stout, features three floors of exhibition space that will showcase historical and contemporary Canadian and international art. The opening marks a major milestone in the AGA’s New Vision project and fulfills its goal of creating an art gallery of national significance for the Province of Alberta.

“It is the AGA’s dream that a rebuilt, renewed Art Gallery of Alberta will serve as a cultural centre of excellence for the
Alberta community today and beyond, for generations to come,” says Allan Scott, Chair, AGA Board of Directors. “Our new building was planned, designed and constructed by an extremely talented and dedicated project team and the
tireless AGA staff. The team deserves a great big thank you from everyone.”

An official ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 10 am. This significant occasion follows more than 10 years of planning and three years of construction. The Art Gallery of Alberta’s New Vision building project has been funded by an $88 million capital campaign, with major support from all three levels of government as well as tremendous private sector donations.

Presiding over the hour-long private ceremony will be the Chair of the AGA’s Board of Directors, Allan E. Scott. In attendance will be Canada’s Minister of Public Works and Government Services, The Honourable Rona Ambrose; Minister of State, Western Economic Diversification, The Honourable Lynne Yelich; Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, The Honourable Norman L. Kwong; Minister of Alberta Culture and Community Spirit, The Honourable Lindsay Blackett; and His Worship Mayor Stephen Mandel from the City of Edmonton, as well as the Gallery’s architectural team, Randall Stout Architects Incorporated.

“As we open our doors to our new facility, we embrace a most ambitious agenda. It is an auspicious day for Edmontonians and Albertans as the AGA takes its place amongst great Canadian art museums with enormous
enthusiasm and tremendous capacity,” says Gilles Hébert, AGA Executive Director. “We are committed to being
leaders in the field and to providing our visitors with exceptional experiences. And this facility is perfectly suited to the bold future we envision.”

The Gallery will welcome the public on January 31 and February 1, 2010 with free timed-ticket admission. Approximately 10,000 timed-tickets for the two-day opening were distributed via the Gallery’s website. Released on January 18, 2010, these limited timed-tickets were fully booked in less than 24-hours. Gallery admission on the two
opening days will only be possible with a timed-ticket. Regular admission hours will begin February 2, 2010.

Celebrating its prominent location on Sir Winston Churchill Square in the heart of the Arts District in downtown Edmonton, the design of new AGA extends the Gallery into the community, welcoming visitors to experience art first hand. The design takes inspiration from the city of Edmonton’s unique northern environment and urban grid. Angular windows are juxtaposed against a winding 190-metre steel ribbon that references the forms of the North Saskatchewan River and Aurora Borealis. The movement of this continuous stainless steel structure through the Gallery’s interior and
exterior reinvents the museum’s public spaces, continually connecting visitors with their downtown surroundings.
The building is crafted from three key materials: patinaed zinc, high performance glazing, and stainless steel. These materials reflect Edmonton’s dramatic weather pattern and the extreme contrast of the long days of summer and the
short days of winter, allowing the building to transform in response to its natural surroundings.

Randall Stout Architects, Inc. (RSA) was selected from 25 international submissions during the spring of 2005, to
redesign the former gallery building originally designed by Edmonton architect Don Bittorf in 1969. The RSA design was chosen by a selection committee and announced on October 15, 2005. The new building has nearly doubled the area of the former gallery and its environmental controls meet the highest museum standards.

The new AGA also includes an expanded education facility, the Singhmar Education Centre for Art Education, as
well as upgraded art-handling facilities and celebratory public event spaces. Highlights include a fully outfitted theatre; a museum store, Shop AGA; a ‘floating’ room, the Borealis Lounge; a relaxed fine dining establishment, Zinc; as well as the L1 Espresso Bar and 3rd floor Terrace Café. The AGA is directly accessible from Edmonton’s underground light rail transportation system (LRT) entrance.

Inaugural exhibitions feature significant works by artists from Alberta, Canada and beyond, including masters Edgar
Degas and Francisco Goya, celebrated Canadian photographers Yousuf Karsh and Edward Burtynsky and
internationally renowned Canadian artists Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller. The new AGA also includes The
BMO World of Creativity, an interactive children’s gallery that will focus on the theme of architecture for the opening year with the exhibition Play on Architecture! Two outdoor spaces have been added to the Gallery, which will feature sculpture by Alberta artists Ken Macklin and Peter Hide. A wide-range of public programs, including family activities, late night events, lectures, films and more, will animate exhibitions at the new AGA.

ABOUT THE ART GALLERY OF ALBERTA
The Art Gallery of Alberta is creating a new gallery—a “New Vision” for Alberta’s capital. After a global architectural competition, Los Angeles based Randall Stout Architects, Inc. was selected to design the new gallery. With opening exhibitions in early 2010, the new AGA will be an 85,000 square foot premier presentation venue for international and Canadian art, education and scholarship. The new AGA will be a centre of excellence for the visual arts in Western Canada in the 21st century, expressing the creative spirit of Alberta and connecting people, art and ideas.

Founded in 1924, the Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) is the oldest cultural institution in Alberta and the only museum in the province strictly devoted to the exhibition and preservation of art and visual culture. Serving both the city of Edmonton and the province of Alberta, the Gallery maintains a collection of nearly 6,000 objects. The AGA is focused on the development and presentation of original exhibitions of contemporary and historical art; on building national and international curatorial partnerships for the creation of new exhibition projects; and on the development and delivery of a program of touring exhibitions that disseminate contemporary and historical art within Alberta and across Canada.

The AGA is a not-for-profit organization that relies on the generous support of its Members, donors, sponsors and government. The Art Gallery of Alberta is grateful for the generous support of the many public and private donors and sponsors who have made the AGA’s New Vision possible, as well as the ongoing support of the City of Edmonton, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, The Canada Council for the Arts and our Members.
