The Art Gallery of Alberta is seeking submissions for the Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art exhibition, which will be jointly organized and presented at the Art Gallery of Alberta and the Walter Phillips Gallery  at The Banff Centre in the Summer/Fall of 2017.

History of the Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art

Since its inception in 1996, the Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art has presented new and exciting works by over 180 Alberta contemporary artists. The Alberta Biennial has served to promote Alberta artists across the country and brings national attention to Alberta’s art scene.

2017 Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art

Selected artists for the 2017 Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art will participate in a four day event entitled the Alberta Biennial Sessions at The Banff Centre between July 7 – 10, 2016 (dates to be confirmed) together with the Curators and additional guests to workshop their artwork in progress and the themes of the exhibition. Accommodation and meals will be provided to selected artists.

The Curators of 2017 Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art

The Art Gallery of Alberta is pleased to announce that Kristy Trinier and Peta Rake will co-curate the 10th version of the Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art.

Kristy Trinier is Curator at the Art Gallery of Alberta. Trinier curated Future Station: 2015 Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art, as well as exhibitions at the AGA and Enterprise Square Galleries. Her previous roles include Public Art Director at the Edmonton Arts Council, where she managed the City of Edmonton’s Public Art Collection, related exhibitions and public art programs and Grant Writer at The Banff Centre. Trinier has written for Canadian Art, Momus and other arts publications. Trinier holds a Bachelors degree in Visual Art and English from the University of Victoria, and a Masters degree in Public Art from the Dutch Art Institute (DAI, ArtEZ Hogeschool voor de Kunsten) as a Huygens scholar in The Netherlands.

Peta Rake is the Curator of Walter Phillips Gallery at The Banff Centre and the Banff International Curatorial Institute. She has curated exhibitions at ISCP (New York), Oakland Museum of California (Oakland), CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Art (San Francisco), Luggage Store Gallery (San Francisco) and a forthcoming co-curatorial project with the Esker Foundation (Calgary). She had previously worked at California College of the Arts and Steven Leiber Archive (San Francisco) and the Institute of Modern Art (Brisbane). She writes regularly for C Magazine and her texts have appeared in Canadian Art, Fillip, San Francisco Arts Quarterly, Rearviews, Institutions by Artists and On Apology. She holds a Masters in Curatorial Practice from California College of the Arts, a Bachelors degree in Creative Industries from Queensland University of Technology and was the recipient of the 2014 Curator Award from ISCP in New York.

The Submission Process

As with all past Alberta Biennial exhibitions, the curatorial selection process will commence with a public Call for Submissions to resident Alberta artists.

Submissions should include the following:

  • Artist’s Statement (250 words or less)
  • Artist’s Biography (100 words or less)
  • Concept of an artwork not presented in public before, or an unrealized work (250 words or less, and 1 image)
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Visual support material:  Upload 10 samplesof your artistic work on a USB drive.

Please include description of work, title, date created, mediums, and size.

  • Image files: up to 5 MB each, jpg files only. Maximum 10 images, numbered 1-10.
  • Video files: up to 60MB each, no longer than 5 minutes in length. You may also link to media via YouTube, Vimeo and SoundCloud. Maximum 3 video files.
  • Audio files: up to 30MB each, no longer than 5 minutes in length. Maximum 3 files.
  • a self-addressed envelope with appropriate postage for return delivery if required.
