Exhibition Guide Program


Exhibition Guides act as key members of the Interpretive Team at the Art Gallery of Alberta. Reporting to the Interpretive Programs Manager through AGA Interpretive Staff, Exhibition Guides are volunteers who offer informal, conversation-based interpretive opportunities in the Gallery spaces. This is a unique position that helps engage visitors when there is higher traffic in the Gallery. Responsible for communicating both key interpretive messages and in-depth knowledge about exhibitions and works of art, Exhibition Guides must be both engaging and thoughtful as they animate the artwork on display. Exhibition Guides are generally scheduled on weekends and during Servus Community Access Night.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Act as an approachable host within exhibition spaces
  • Successfully communicate ideas and information from training materials to the public
  • Enhance the knowledge and enjoyment of gallery visitors
  • Represent the Gallery in a positive manner
  • Actively participate in training sessions


Applicants to the Exhibition Guide Program must meet the following criteria:

  • Strong communication and public speaking skills
  • Passion for and openness to the visual arts
  • Ability to think on one’s feet
  • Past experience in an arts or related cultural institution – can include previous courses and volunteering
  • A minimum of 2 years of post secondary education, preferably in Art History, Fine Arts or related
  • Be comfortable approaching guests in the Gallery

Time Commitment

All Exhibition Guides must be available for all of the following commitments:

  • Sign up for at least two three-hour weekend shifts a month
  • Attend all introductory and in-gallery training sessions
  • Read all training materials provided

Volunteers interested in applying to the Exhibition Guide Program are encouraged to submit a CV and statement of intent to Applicants who meet the qualifications mentioned above will be contacted for an interview. All Exhibition Guides are subject to a probationary period of 3 months.
