Initiated in the fall of 2011, the Manning Hall commission series is a new, ongoing project that provides unique opportunities for the AGA to support the creation and exhibition of new, site-specific works by Alberta artists. The second project in this series, MARK CLINTBERG: Behind this lies my true desire for you, will open to the public on Saturday, July 14.
In conceiving of this work, Clintberg responded to the AGA’s recent renovation and re-branding campaign, your AGA. The piece pastes a rugged barn façade overtop of the Gallery’s new walls and includes a message, roughly hand-painted in the style of the writing inscribed on grain elevators on the Canadian prairie. The text painted on this wall suggests that behind the wall itself, as well as the Gallery’s renovation, is an ardent desire for viewers – for their ideas and involvement. The work can also be seen as a more personal message, from the artist to a specific viewer or from the reader to an unknown other. These words are intended for you.
