2017 Summer ArtBreak Camps

Kids’ Camps

ArtBreak day camps run throughout July and August and are designed to connect students 6-12 with art and ideas. Camps are five days unless otherwise specified.

July 4-7 | Canadian Art Legends (4 days)
$236/$216 AGA members
Students ages 6-8
Students ages 9-12

Which Canadian artist had a monkey as a pet? Who disappeared into the wilderness? Learn about the lives and times of some of Canada’s most famous artists including Emily Carr and Tom Thomson as well as featured artists Marion Nicoll and Alex Janvier. Use what you have discovered about these artists and their methods to create your own art legend!

July 10-14 | Horse Camp

Students ages 8-13

Draw, paint and sculpt horses in the studio before heading to the stables to ride in this perennial favourite ARtBreak Camp! Learn about landscape painting and develop drawing and illustration skills before heading outdoors to create en plein air surrounded by the great outdoors and horses, of course! This ArtBreak Camp includes horse riding and outdoor activities.

July 17-21 | Art Zoo
$335/$306 AGA Members
Students ages 6-8
Students ages 9-12

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Work both in the studio and on site at the Edmonton Valley Zoo to discover the art of animals. Work in 2-D and 3-D to learn drawing, painting and sculpting techniques while learning more about the animal world. This ArtBreak camp includes two days of art-making, explorations and games at the Edmonton Valley Zoo.

July 24-28| Art Makers
$280/$257 AGA Members
Students ages 6-8
Students ages 9-12

Join us in our own makerlab to experiment with art materials, investigate art technologies and solve art & design challenges. Over the course of the week, explore current exhibitions to discover how artists use a wide range of technology in innovative ways. In the studio, projects include colour experiments, bio-art investigations, robotic drawing, video documentations and creations, and more!

July 31 – August 4 | Shutterbug Club
$280/$257 AGA Members
Students ages 6-8
Students ages 9-12

Investigate dramatic lighting, interesting compositions, and fun digital photography techniques with this camp. Examine how artists incorporate photographs and other art media to create unique works of art. Paint on photos, add text, explore collage and draw inspiration from current exhibitions. Push boundaries as you take your knowledge of photography to the next level! This ArtBreak Camp includes outdoor community walks and a visit to the Muttart Conservatory for photography assignments.

Please bring along a digital camera and a USB flash drive on which to record your work.

August 8-11 | Art Journalling (4 days)

Students ages 9-12

Experiment with mixed media and turn an ordinary book into a work of art. Visit the gallery for inspiration and document what you see, record the world around you or capture your thoughts on a page. Play with image and text, story development and various artistic techniques to share your stories.

August 14-18 | Creative Collaborations

Students ages 9-12

What is Art? If you replied visual art, dance, theatre and music, this camp is for you! In this energetic ArtBreak camp, explore the connections between the arts as you crisscross creative boundaries. Work collaboratively with AGA educators and guest artists to create new experimental artworks. Use a variety of materials and techniques including painting, drawing, dance interpretations, music-making projects and more! Tour some of Edmonton’s other art centres for additional inspiration.

August 21-25 | Animation Camp
$280/$257 AGA Members
Students ages 6-8
Students ages 9-12

Learn the ins and outs of animation in this dynamic ArtBreak Camp. Meet with guest artists and professional illustrators to create a series of animated projects that explore art in motion. Start with animation basics including setting, character and story development. Explore the gallery to gather ideas and then work in 2-D and 3-D using a variety of techniques, both traditional and digital, to bring your animations to life.

Youth Camps

July 17-21 | For the Time Being

Students ages 13-17

Visit For the Time Being, this year’s edition of the Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art, and explore what motivates local artists. Back in the studio, push your own boundaries while developing new skills. Work across mediums, in 2D and 3D, installation and video; experiment with a myriad of materials to create a series of artwork in your own unique style.

August 14-18 | Portfolio Prep
