The Automatiste Revolution: Montreal 1941–1960 focuses on the Quebec-based artists known as Les Automatistes, who were the first to bring modernist painting to Canada and to embrace avant-garde, gestural abstraction. Curator Roald Nasgaard will take guests on a private tour of this new exhibition. Nasgaard is a professor of art history and, for the past decade, chair of the art department at Florida State University. His long and distinguished museum career includes fifteen years as chief curator at the Art Gallery of Ontario, during which he oversaw many projects, among them the 1984 exhibition and publication The Mystic North. He is the author of Abstract Painting in Canada, which was called “engaging” and “brilliant” by The Globe and Mail.
