Internationally renowned art critic Michael Fried to give lecture at AGA

Public talk will focus on photography’s importance in contemporary art

EDMONTON, AB – The Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) is proud to host poet, art historian, art critic, and literary critic Michael Fried in an exclusive lecture on Saturday, October 15 at 2 pm. This lecture is presented in partnership with the Canadian Art Foundation as part of the Canadian Art Foundation International Speaker Series and is being held in conjunction with the recently-opened AGA exhibition 19th Century French Photographs from the National Gallery of Canada. Tickets for the talk are $15 / $10 for AGA Members, and are available at youraga.ca.

AGA announces winning project for Manning Hall commission

Edmonton artist Dara Humniski to create new work for Gallery’s main floor hall

EDMONTON, AB – The Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) is pleased to announce that Edmonton artist Dara Humniski has been awarded the commission for the Art Gallery of Alberta’s Manning Hall. Humniski will create a new temporary installation for the AGA’s main floor space, which will be open to the public on November 20, 2011. A special sneak preview will take place at the AGA’s next Refinery party on Saturday, November 19. The exhibition will remain on view until Sunday, May 20, 2012. Admission to the AGA’s Manning Hall is free.

AGA Seeks wild performers for Turn it UP NORTH video contest

EDMONTON, AB – In celebration of the recently opened exhibition UP NORTH, the Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) announces the launch of the Turn it Up North video contest, running September 15-October 17, 2011. The public is invited to put themselves out there by creating one minute videos of performances (singing, playing music, dancing, acting, telling jokes, etc.) in the wild. The contest winner will receive two tickets to the AGA’s Refinery late night art party on November 19, 2011 and a prize package courtesy of Camper’s Village. The top ten videos will be screened at Refinery.
