May 29, 2012

Edmonton, AB (May 29/12) – The Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) is pleased to announce the opening of two new exhibitions: LOUISE BOURGEOIS 1911-2010 and 7 YEARS IN THE CITY: Art from the AGA Collection.

In LOUISE BOURGEOIS 1911-2010, open from June 2-Septmeber 23, 2012, the AGA honours the career of one of the 20th-century’s most remarkable artists: Louise Bourgeois. Bourgeois’ sculptural practice influenced many of the major art and cultural movements of the past century, such as Surrealism, Abstract Expression and Feminism. Despite her passing in 2010, her work continues to impact contemporary art around the world. LOUISE BOURGEOIS 1911-2010 brackets this artist’s extraordinary career, featuring some of her earliest works and those produced shortly before her death.

LOUISE BOURGEOIS 1911-2010 is curated by Jonathan Shaughnessy, Associate Curator, Contemporary Art, at the National Gallery of Canada. On Sunday, June 3 at 1 pm, Shaughnessy will be delivering a special lecture at the AGA. Hear about this remarkable and influential artist and the development of this exhibition.

This exhibition is part of “National Gallery of Canada at the Art Gallery of Alberta,” program and is presented with the support of Capital Powered Art, an exhibition series sponsored by Capital Power Corporation.

7 YEARS IN THE CITY: Art from the AGA Collection, June 2-September 30, 2012, features art works drawn from the AGA’s collection and highlights work produced in a seven year period, from 1981-1987. Featuring the work of 15 contemporary Edmonton artists, the exhibition is a distilled moment in the significant history of modernist abstraction in Edmonton. 7 YEARS IN THE CITY is the second in a series of exhibitions to be presented in 2012 that celebrate the diversity of the local art scene as represented by works in the AGA collection.

7 YEARS IN THE CITY features works from Giuseppe Albi, Catherine Burgess, Isla Burns, Philip Darrah, Clay Ellis, Gerald Faulder, Douglas Haynes, Peter Hide, Terrence Keller, Ken Macklin, Vesna Makale, Graham Peacock, Al Reynolds, Robert Scott and Mitchel Smith.
